The Fire Marshal's Office is responsible for Fire Inspections, Code Enforcement, Certificates of Occupancy, Housing Inspections, Public Education for fire safety, and registration of landscapers. The Office strictly enforces the New Jersey Uniform Fire Code as well as city ordinances for property maintenance and disposal of trash, recycling and bulk waste.  Property owners are required to have cans with tightly fitting lids and to keep their trash areas neat and clean.  Please note the following:

  • Bulk waste may only be placed at the curb for collection on Tuesday night after 6:00 PM for Wednesday collection.  No more than 8 items may be placed for collection.  There is NO BULK TRASH COLLECTION when there is a Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday holiday in that week.  Construction, demolition waste and hazardous waste, such as paint, chemicals, oils, anti-freeze and other toxins are not collected by the City and are not permitted to be placed at the curb.  Violators are issued summonses and must appear in Municipal Court where they face fines up to $1,000.  Contact the Department of Public Works with questions at 732-571-6520.
  • Illegal dumping laws are strictly enforced.  Violators are subject to large fines and possible forfeiture of their vehicles.
  • Unregistered and/or inoperable vehicles are not permitted to be stored on public or private property. Vehicles are not permitted to be parked on front, side or rear yards.
  • All buildings and properties must be maintained and kept clean.  Grass must be cut regularly.
  • A Certificate of Occupancy is required every time occupancy is changed in any dwelling.  In addition, new State Fire Code regulations require a Certificate of Smoke Detector/Carbon Monoxide Detector Compliance in one and two family dwellings whenever there is a change in tenancy or change of title in buildings that contain natural gas fired appliances.
  • New businesses require a Commercial Certificate of Occupancy and inspections from the Fire Marshal's Office.


The Fire Marshal's Office and the Long Branch Office of Emergency Management operate an Emergency Alert Radio Station on 1620 AM.  The radio station broadcasts public service messages such as road closings, special events, school closings and the National Weather Service.  Flashing lights are located at three main roads leading into the City and are activated to advise motorists when to tune into 1620 AM for important message and for National Weather Service broadcasts when storm warnings are in effect.  Contact the Fire Marshal's Office at 732-571-5651 with any questions.
